The Hairstyle Project

By Jennifer Paretta

Could trading my long locks for a shorter 'do change my life? Nah. But, six months and three cuts later, I've learned a lot about hair products -- and a little about myself.

Taking a Hair Risk

Long hair is sexy. It's also pretty safe. I should know. I've worn my hair that way for the past five years. It was simple to style or throw back into a ponytail, which made my life easier: I've got two kids, a husband, and a part-time business.

I turned 38 this year, and life is still as busy as ever, though a few things have changed. My 5-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son are becoming more independent, so I actually have an extra second to focus on myself. Also, I just finished getting my teaching degree, so I'm ready to start a new career.

I didn't want to play it safe anymore with a predictable style. The question was -- could I pull off short hair and still feel sophisticated, sexy, and confident?

To find out, I went to Edward Tricomi, New York City stylist and co-owner of Warren Tricomi salons. He suggested cutting my hair in phases so I could live with each style for several months. I discovered that stepping out of my comfort zone was a risk worth taking.
